My All-Time Favorite Actresses

by Front-Row-Reviews | created - 2 weeks ago | updated - 2 weeks ago | Public

Here is a list of all my favorite actresses to ever grace the silver screen. I've had my crushes and phases over the years with different actresses, but these here are the ones who've endured. They are the very best. They are not listed in any particular order.

1. Madeleine Stowe

Actress | Twelve Monkeys

Madeleine Stowe was born in Los Angeles, California, to Mireya Maria (Mora Steinvorth) and Robert Alfred Stowe, a civil engineer. Her mother was a from a prominent political family in Costa Rica. Stowe grew up in Eagle Rock, a working-class neighborhood of Los Angeles. At age ten she started ...

I absolutely fell in love with Madeleine when I first saw her in Stakeout (1987). My appreciation for this beautiful actress just continued to grow over the years in such films as Unlawful Entry, The Last of the Mohicans, China Moon, 12 Monkeys, and The General's Daughter.

2. Sophie Marceau

Actress | La boum

Sophie Marceau was born Sophie Danièle Sylvie Maupu in Paris, France, to Simone (Morisset), a shop assistant, and Benoît Maupu, a truck driver. She grew up far from the studio spotlights. When she was 14 she was living in the Paris suburb of Gentilly with her father. She learned from friends that ...

Sophie first captured my heart as the french princess in the epic film, Braveheart (1995). Though she primarily starred in french films over the years, I was able to enjoy seeing her in other movies such as The World Is Not Enough, and the lighthearted romantic comedy, Lost & Found.

3. Michelle Pfeiffer

Actress | Hairspray

Michelle Pfeiffer was born in Santa Ana, California, to Donna Jean (Taverna) and Richard Pfeiffer, a heating and air-conditioning contractor. She has an older brother and two younger sisters - Dedee Pfeiffer and Lori Pfeiffer, who both dabbled in acting and modeling but decided against making it ...

She is as talented as she is beautiful. She first caught my attention in Ladyhawke (1985) and The Witches of Eastwick (1987). I've loved her in everything I seen her in since, especially in the two films, One Fine Day and What Lies Beneath.

4. Kathy Bates

Actress | Misery

Multi-talented Kathleen Doyle Bates was born on June 28, 1948, and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. She is the youngest of three girls born to Bertye Kathleen (Talbot), a homemaker, and Langdon Doyle Bates, a mechanical engineer. Her grandfather was author Finis L. Bates. Kathy has English, as well as...

Kathy Bates is simply awesome. Down to earth, "like me or hate me", she is my kinda woman. I was always aware of her, but never really had a true appreciation for her until she starred in Misery (1990) as Paul Sheldon's #1 Fan. Everything I've ever seen her in since, she rocks.

5. Meryl Streep

Actress | Out of Africa

Considered by many critics to be the greatest living actress, Meryl Streep has been nominated for the Academy Award an astonishing 21 times, and has won it three times. Meryl was born Mary Louise Streep in 1949 in Summit, New Jersey, to Mary Wolf (Wilkinson), a commercial artist, and Harry William ...

She is perhaps the best actress I've ever seen. The first time I saw Sophie's Choice (1982), she crushed my heart in the movie's pivotal scene. Wow. Very few actresses are as masterful at their craft as she is. Her fine performances are simply too many to number.

6. Grace Kelly

Actress | Rear Window

On November 12, 1929, Grace Patricia Kelly was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to wealthy parents. Her girlhood was uneventful for the most part, but one of the things she desired was to become an actress which she had decided on at an early age. After her high school graduation in 1947, Grace ...

She was one of the very first actresses to capture me. She was the definition of elegance. As James Stewart's love interest in Hitchcock's Rear Window (1954), I fell in love with her. She was also wonderful in Dial M For Murder and To Catch A Thief. It was a sad, sad day when she died.

7. Chloë Grace Moretz

Actress | Let Me In

Chloë Grace Moretz was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Teri (Duke), a nurse, and McCoy Lee Moretz, a plastic surgeon. She has four brothers, all older, including actor Trevor Duke-Moretz. Her ancestry is mostly German and English.

This phenomenal young actress simply took over the world with her performance in Kick-Ass (2010). It was easy to see there was something special about her and I followed her ensuing career with great interest. She has not let me down.

8. Marisa Tomei

Marisa Tomei was born on December 4, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York, to Patricia "Addie" (Bianchi), a teacher of English, and Gary Tomei, a lawyer, both of Italian descent. Marisa has a brother, actor Adam Tomei. As a child, Marisa's mother frequently corrected her speech as to eliminate her heavy ...

Now this is my kinda woman. She's beautiful, she's witty, she's funny, she's vibrant, she's ageless. I've loved her in everything I've seen her in. My personal favorite performances by Marisa were in Untamed Heart, My Cousin Vinny, Only You, and The Wrestler.

9. Ginger Rogers

Actress | The Major and the Minor

Ginger Rogers was born Virginia Katherine McMath in Independence, Missouri on July 16, 1911. Her mother, known as Lelee, went to Independence to have Ginger away from her husband. She had a baby earlier in their marriage and he allowed the doctor to use forceps and the baby died. She was kidnapped ...

Yes, she can dance. But she can also act and ham it up. She was way ahead of her time. Ginger Rogers would have been just as popular today as she was back then. A personal favorite of mine and always will be.

10. Nicole Kidman

Actress | Moulin Rouge!

Elegant blonde Nicole Kidman, known as one of Hollywood's top Australian imports, was actually born in Honolulu, Hawaii, while her Australian parents were there on educational visas.

Kidman is the daughter of Janelle Ann (Glenny), a nursing instructor, and Antony David Kidman, a biochemist and ...

She can melt my heart every time. I first saw Nicole Kidman in the tense thriller, Dead Calm (1989) and have seen her in everything since. She is one of the few actresses that actually gets more beautiful with time. Great actress, beautiful woman.

11. Angela Lansbury

Actress | The Manchurian Candidate

British character actress, long in the United States. The daughter of an actress and the granddaughter of a high-ranking politician, Lansbury studied acting from her youth, departing for the United States as the Second World War began. She was contracted by MGM while still a teenager and nominated ...

I love this woman. She, maybe more than any other actress out there, has a big heart. I grew up with her in Bedknobs & Broomsticks (1971), followed her mystery adventures in Murder, She Wrote and sang along with her as Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast. She's one of the very best.

12. Betty White

Actress | The Proposal

Betty White was born in Oak Park, Illinois, to Christine Tess (Cachikis), a homemaker, and Horace Logan White, a lighting company executive for the Crouse-Hinds Electric Company. She is of Danish, Greek, English, and Welsh descent.

Although best known as the devious Sue Ann Nivens on the classic ...

All I have to do is just see her walk into a scene onscreen and it will make me smile. If anyone could possibly have as big of a heart as Angela Lansbury, it would be this wonderful actress here. She's sweet, she's adorable, she's truly beautiful - the type that comes from inside.

13. Jodie Foster

Actress | The Silence of the Lambs

Jodie Foster was born Alicia Christian Foster on November 19, 1962 in Los Angeles. She is the daughter of Evelyn Ella "Brandy" (Almond), a producer, and Lucius Fisher Foster III, an Air Force lieutenant colonel and real estate broker. Brandy had filed for divorce in 1959 after having three children...

I grew up watching the tomboy, Jodie Foster, in classic films such as Candleshoe and Freak Friday. Little did I know just how beautiful a woman was waiting to emerge from that little girl. She was always a good actress, and still one of the best today.

14. Julianne Moore

Actress | The Hours

Julianne Moore was born Julie Anne Smith in Fort Bragg, North Carolina on December 3, 1960, the daughter of Anne (Love), a social worker, and Peter Moore Smith, a paratrooper, colonel, and later military judge. Her mother moved to the U.S. in 1951, from Greenock, Scotland. Her father, from ...

What can I say about her? She shows extraordinary depth for an actress ... not afraid to take on some of those harder roles and then deliver. She has an unspoken charm and dynamic range. She is probably the next generation Meryl Streep.

15. Viola Davis

Actress | Fences

Actress Viola Davis was born on her grandmother's farm, at the then-Singleton Plantation in St. Matthews, South Carolina. When she was two months old her family moved to Central Falls, Rhode Island, where her father, Dan Davis, worked as a horse groomer and trainer. Her mother, Mary Alice (Logan), ...

Strong actress - dedicated to every single role she is given. She digs deeper inside of herself than most do. It's almost effortless with her. Another master of her craft. She is one of the few actresses that will make me watch a movie simply because she's in it.

16. Natalie Portman

Actress | Black Swan

Natalie Portman is the first person born in the 1980s to have won the Academy Award for Best Actress (for Black Swan (2010)).

Natalie was born Natalie Hershlag on June 9, 1981, in Jerusalem, Israel. She is the only child of Avner Hershlag, a Israeli-born doctor, and Shelley Stevens, an American-born...

When I first saw her as a little girl in the crime film, Leon - The Professional (1994), I knew she was going to be something special. She has a natural charisma. It's like the camera and she were made for each other. However, when I saw her in Black Swan, I became a fan for life.

17. Charlize Theron

Actress | Monster

Charlize Theron was born in Benoni, a city in the greater Johannesburg area, in South Africa, the only child of Gerda Theron (née Maritz) and Charles Theron. She was raised on a farm outside the city. Theron is of Afrikaner (Dutch, with some French Huguenot and German) descent, and Afrikaner ...

Charlize can pretty much do it all. She can be the glamour girl, she can be the action hero, she can be the depressed serial killer, she can be the brains of an elite group - but whatever she does, she is always beautiful. I love this actress.

18. Jennifer Lawrence

Actress | The Hunger Games

Was the highest-paid actress in the world in 2015 and 2016. With her films grossing over $5.5 billion worldwide, Jennifer Lawrence is often cited as the most successful actor of her generation. She is also thus far the only person born in the 1990s to have won an acting Oscar.

Jennifer Shrader ...

I have to admit, I really wasn't a big Jennifer Lawrence fan with only the X-Men and Hunger Games movies to base her acting on. But after seeing her turns in other productions like, Joy, Winter's Bone and Passengers, I fell in love with her. I'm looking forward to more.

19. Jennifer Connelly

Actress | A Beautiful Mind

Jennifer Connelly was born in the Catskill Mountains, New York, to Ilene (Schuman), a dealer of antiques, and Gerard Connelly, a clothing manufacturer. Her father had Irish and Norwegian ancestry, and her mother was from a Jewish immigrant family. Jennifer grew up in Brooklyn Heights, just across ...

Jennifer Connelly is one of the few actresses that is the embodiment of true beauty. I don't think she even realizes how beautiful she is. If you were in a crowded room, all heads would turn the moment she enters - and rightfully so. Oh yes, and she can act too.

20. Drew Barrymore

Producer | Never Been Kissed

Since melting audiences' hearts - at the age of six - in Steven Spielberg's beloved sci-fi blockbuster, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Drew Barrymore has emerged as one of the most endearing and talented actresses of her generation.

Drew Blyth Barrymore was born in Culver City, California, to ...

Debra Winger was one of my very first favorite actresses. I loved her in An Officer And A Gentleman (1982), Legal Eagles (1986), Betrayed (1988), and Leap Of Faith (1992). Never a weak performance from this leading lady.

This is one classy woman. She is smart, intelligent and a very, very good actress. Does she ever age? Not from where I sit. She's just as beautiful today as the first time I ever saw her. I hope she never stops.

23. Audrey Hepburn

She was truly elegant and beautiful. She pulled me in from the very first moment I saw her. She could grace the silver screen like few others could or ever will again. I never tire of watching her.

24. Helen Hunt

Actress | As Good as It Gets

Helen Hunt began studying acting at the age of eight with her father, respected director and acting coach Gordon Hunt. A year later she made her professional debut and afterwards worked steadily in films, theatre and television.

Helen Hunt kind of brings a no-nonsense approach to her roles that I really like. She is down-to-earth and real. When she is onscreen, I pay attention - she can really draw you in. She is subtle in her approach which can be very powerful.

25. Jeanne Tripplehorn

Actress | Basic Instinct

Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on June 10, 1963, Jeanne Tripplehorn developed an interest in performing through her father, guitarist Tom Tripplehorn, who at one time recorded with the pop group Gary Lewis & The Playboys on such hits as "This Diamond Ring". (Note: many references list Jeanne's father's ...

There is something about Jeanne Tripplehorn. She was so good in everything I've seen her in. In my humble opinion, I felt her performance in Basic Instinct was better than Sharon Stone's. I loved her in The Firm, and even in Waterworld. She's beautiful, she has amazing depth as an actress - and we need more from her.

26. Ashley Judd

Actress | Double Jeopardy

American actress and political activist Ashley Judd was born Ashley Tyler Ciminella on April 19, 1968, in Granada Hills, California. Anne Archer is the woman that every man would love to be married to. Unfortunately, we don't have nearly enough starring roles from her over the years, but her turns in Fatal Attraction, Narrow Margin and the Jack Ryan movies were more than enough to make me a lifelong fan.

28. Rene Russo

Actress | Nightcrawler

Rene Russo was born in Burbank, California, to Shirley (Balocca), a barmaid and factory laborer, and Nino Russo. She grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. Her father, a sculptor and mechanic, left the family when Rene was just two, and thus her mother raised Rene and her sister, Toni, as a ...

Rene Russo is as good an actress as she is beautiful. When I first saw her in Major League and Mr. Destiny, I liked her back then. She has since become one of Hollywood's best in blockbuster films and deservedly so.

29. Jamie Lee Curtis

Actress | True Lies

Jamie Lee Curtis was born on November 22, 1958 in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of legendary actors Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis. She got her big break at acting in 1978 when she won the role of Laurie Strode in Halloween (1978). After that, she became famous for roles in movies like Trading...
