Robert Gray and Richard Waldron are rivals for the hand of Ethel Dixon. She favors Waldron and accepts his proposal. Knowing Waldron's one weakness, Gray gets him intoxicated, then calls Ethel to gaze upon the man she is about to marry. She breaks the engagement. Waldron realizes he has stepped into a trap and confronts Gray. A fierce battle follows, in which Waldron stuns Gray with a blow on the head. Thinking he has killed Gray, Waldron tells his father all. His father advises him to give up his law practice and the girl and leave the country. He departs. Years later he has fallen into the depths. He is rescued by one of his former clients, whom he had saved from the gallows. The old fellow, realizing his debt of gratitude, brings about a reconciliation between Waldron and his father, which results in the renewal of the engagement with Ethel.
