Charming series with a fantastic lead actress
27 August 2017 | by lady_hotaruSee all my reviews

This was my first introduction to Anne of the Green Gables, having heard a lot about it but never having read the books or hardly seen any adaptation of it. I just knew it was a really popular story, here in Canada. So I gave "Anne" a try. And it was a charming experience !

At first, Anne's constant talking and exuberant personality (sometimes kinda weird, even) can seem a bit annoying to the audience but you get used to it quite fast. Amybeth McNulty's performance blew me away. She's sassy, funny, natural and profoundly moving. This young lady sure has a great future in acting, I tell you. I also really loved Geraldine Page as Marilla, how she goes from being cold and harsh to opening up gradually and softening her ways as her bond with Anne gets stronger.

My only big issue was that it was sometimes a bit too melodramatic. But overall, Moira Walley-Beckett's writing was great and the cinematography was superb. It's a very well made series with an heroine you'll quickly get attached to. If, like me, you're not aware of this classic of Canadian literature, it's worth viewing !
